Music & Politics in Hungary Between the Two World Wars
Over the past decade, Hungarian musicology has shown a growing interest in the musical life of the country in the interwar period. The history of musical life during the interwar period is naturally intertwined with the general history of the era: its operation, institutional system, and development were constrained because it could not be independent of the political realities of the time. This volume of studies, while not aspiring to comprehensiveness, focuses on various focal points of musical life and aims to present the research directions and results of the past decade. For this reason, the individual studies are so diverse in their subject matter. In terms of research methodology, however, all eight studies follow the method of microhistory, using a large amount of previously unexplored sources, while also seeking to shed light on the close connections between the music scene and everyday politics. The studies appearing in this volume are available in English for the first time.
