Az ugrósdallamok típusainak áttekintésén keresztül történeti összefüggésben mutatja be
a szerző a tánc és kísérőzenéjének viszonyát. Ez a kapcsolat ősi, keleti dallamokat segített megőrizni és életben tartani, sőt további típusok sarjadását is előhozta a zenei anyanyelvből, pl. a reneszánsz proporciós gyakorlat, az ún. „páva-dallam”-ok esetében, vagy a 18. századi tánczenei divat, a „sirató”-dallamokat illetően. A környező népek és a felsőbb társadalmi osztályok közvetítésével középkori és kora újkori dallamok is beépültek az ugrós tánczenei repertoárba. A népies műdalok és az új stílusú dalok már a
csárdás 19. századi tánczenei világához tartoznak, kisebb körzetekben azonban még
ezekre is táncoltak ugróst. Kétszáznál is több vokális és hangszeres dallam kottája szolgál bőséges példaanyagul, közülük jó néhány darab meghallgatható a könyvhöz tartozó CD-n táncdialektusok szerinti csoportosításban. A kiadványt számos, főként a zenészekről készült archív fénykép illusztrálja.





The relationship between dance and its music is presented through a revision of the types
of ugrós tunes. This interrelation has helped preserve and keep alive archaic oriental melodies and even motivated the stemming of new types from the musical vernacular, e.g. the renaissance practice of proportio brought about the so-called „páva” [peacock] tunes or the 18th century dance music fashion promoted the emergence of new “lament” tunes. Through the mediation of neighbouring peoples and upper social strata mediaeval and early modern-time tunes were also incorporated in the musical repertory of ugrós dances. The popular art songs and new-style folksongs belong to the musical realm of the 19th century csárdás, but in limited areas ugrós was also danced to them. The music of more than two hundred vocal and instrumental tunes are presented in the book, several of which or their variants can also be listened to on the appended CD arranged by dance dialects. The book is illustrated by archive photos, most taken of the
musicians.
